A few months ago the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy began asking community members what they would like to see most on the Greenway. The resounding answer? More food options.
Today you will find Andale Express and Beantown Franks ‘n Spuds offering affordable food options in the Wharf District Parks as part of the Conservancy’s pilot food vendor program, which officially launches this week.
Clover Food Labs’ early arrival to the Greenway last week generated quite a bit of buzz, as Greenway-goers shared what they were eating on Twitter and Facebook.

RT @canterburyk Welcome to the neighborhood, @cloverdwy! That egg sammie was beyond delish, thanks! @HelloGreenway
Clover (Twitter handle: @cloverdwy), along with Andale Express (open today), and Silk Road BBQ (opening next week), are part of a new generation of mobile kitchens whose use of social media and image branding have revamped the street food industry, offering tasty, affordable food that some might even call gourmet.
Unlike traditional restaurants, food carts can benefit the urban landscape by increasing foot traffic in locations where it is desired, but might otherwise be difficult due to zoning codes and building restrictions.
While mobile food vendors may not resolve larger urban development problems, these small-scale innovators are helping to reshape the city’s public spaces. On the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway food vendors are encouraging residents of the Greenway district to come out with their friends, family, and co-workers, to meet their neighbors, and to use the parks during breakfast and lunch.
Opening on the Greenway this week are Andale Express, Boston Pushcart, Beantown Franks ‘n Spuds, and Going Bananas. A list of all the Greenway vendors can be found at http://www.rosekennedygreenway.org/visit/food.htm.
